Yoga with a surfer mindset

On Monday, Aug. 27, yoga enthusiasts can “catch a wave of inner peace” thanks to a free community yoga class being held at Lucie Stern Community Center in Palo Alto. The class goes from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. and is being taught by Surfer Mike, who has taught meditation and yoga for more than 20 years.

This will be Surfer Mike’s last free class of the year as he gears up for a nine-week paid series starting Sept. 10. Three points of emphasis during the free class will be to “calm the mind while developing present moment awareness; open the body through an inward middle path style of yoga; and listen to your body and feel deep openings and inner body awareness.”

Surfer Mike is a longtime student of Vipassana mediation and a certified yoga instructor. If you’re interested in taking the class email surfermikek@hotmail.com or register with the city of Palo Alto recreation department by calling 650-463-4900. Surfer Mike recommends bringing a mat to the class or – to really get in the surfer mindset – a beach towel.
