Retail spotlight: Red Flower

Red Flower’s Ohana Gingergrass Bamboo Scrub

Our spa special for September is the Five Elements treatment, a spa experience made all the more luxurious thanks to the use of all organic products from New York-based company Red Flower. Ohana Gingergrass Bamboo Scrub, Jasmine Rose Rhassoul Clay, Japanese Peony Purifying Body Wash and Kinmoxei Wild Lime Silk Oil are among the tantalizing products used in the Five Elements treatment, and that is just a sampling of Red Flower’s array of aromatic offerings.

Red Flower was founded in 1999 by Columbia University grad Yael Alkalay, whose fascination with the “art of scent” started in childhood. Prior to receiving her master’s degree at Columbia, Alkalay spent time in Japan, where she visited traditional bath houses and hot springs and worked as creative director for Shiseido, a Japanese cosmetics company.

But Red Flower didn’t blossom until after Alkalay suffered an intensive stroke while skiing in France. The stroke “made her realize how fleeting life is and how essential it is to live fully, with appreciation and awareness. After making a full recovery, the spark of Red Flower was ignited,” the Red Flower website states.

The company’s line of products is “entwined with her family’s history, from the ottoman tapestry patterns on the packaging to her dedication to making natural perfume.” Red Flower offers a wide selection – candles, scrubs, hair conditioners, lotions, diffusers and travel sets, to name a few. And Red Flower products can be found on the shelves here at Watercourse Way. The seed for Red Flower was planted in Alkalay’s imagination during childhood and has continued to bloom since.
