Nonprofits rally in wake of devastating hurricanes

The Humane Society of the United States is helping animals injured or displaced by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma.

Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Irma in Florida have caused widespread damage and distress in those respective states and beyond. Fortunately there are numerous non-profit organizations and kindhearted citizens eager to offer support to those in need.

The Humane Society of the United States is one such organization, throwing its efforts into helping animals injured or displaced by the massive storms.

“Some areas that Hurricane Irma was not expected to hit have found themselves in the storm’s path, and plans are quickly unfolding to keep animals safe,” the Humane Society states on its website. “We have begun transporting animals to make room in local shelters, and there will likely be an ongoing need to relocate animals in the coming days. This critical work is only possible because of animal lovers like you. When you donate to the Disaster Relief Fund, you ensure that we’re ready to answer the call when animals are in urgent need.”

In Texas, the Houston Food Bank is offering assistance to those affected by Hurricane Harvey.

“The best thing you can do to help the Houston Food Bank right now is to make a donation of money designated for disaster relief,” The Bank states. “Our neighbors urgently need assistance. The Houston Food Bank’s greatest need is for funds that will help us provide relief and continue recovery efforts. Donations will be used for disaster relief until this year’s needs are met, and the remaining funds will support ongoing hunger-relief efforts.”

There are numerous other worthy organizations that are helping assist those affected by the hurricanes, including the American Red Cross, UNICEF and the Salvation Army.
