If you walk on through our Retail Gallery you’ll find an elegant homage to celebrated actor and martial artist Bruce Lee in the form of a handmade necklace baring the words: “Be water, my friend.” The necklace was commissioned for Watercourse Way by Becoming Jewelry of Maine and highlights a concept made famous by Lee in the following quote from 1971:
“Don’t get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow. Be like water. Empty your mind. Be formless, shapeless – like water. Now you put water in a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
Lee’s popularity stretches across continents and generations. The action-film icon and martial-arts legend has influenced and inspired millions. Aside from martial arts and his family, one of Lee’s greatest passions was philosophy, which he studied at the University of Washington. Lee, who was born in San Francisco, could seamlessly weave together philosophy and martial arts.
