The deadliest mass shooting in modern American history occurred Oct. 1, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The attack left at least 58 people dead and more than 450 injured. Several non-profit organizations are helping those affected by the Las Vegas shooting and similar tragedies, as well as urging an end to gun violence, raising awareness and encouraging smarter gun laws.
One such organization is Everytown for Gun Safety. Everytown was founded in 2014, shortly after the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, that killed 20 children.
“Everytown is a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities. Gun violence touches every town in America,” the organization states on its website. “More than 3 million mayors, moms, cops, teachers, survivors, gun owners, and everyday Americans have come together to make their own communities safer.”
The core issues that face Everytown and those they place primary focus on are background checks, domestic violence, gun violence trends, illegal gun trafficking and unintentional deaths, among others.
“Support for the Second Amendment goes hand-in-hand with keeping guns away from criminals and other dangerous people. But it’s simply too easy for the wrong people to get guns, leading to all kinds of violence – from deadly domestic abuse to suicide and school shootings,” the website states. “Research shows – and cops will tell you – that common-sense public safety laws reduce gun violence and save lives. We can put a stop to the more than 33,000 gun deaths that happen every year. And we can do it in a way that still respects the Second Amendment.”
